Check your blood pressure category and learn when to seek medical care. Based on guidelines from the American Heart Association.
Systolic (top number) is the pressure when your heart beats. Diastolic (bottom number) is the pressure when your heart rests. Both numbers matter for your overall blood pressure assessment. A reading is typically given as systolic/diastolic, like 120/80.
Seek emergency care if your reading is above 180/120 (hypertensive crisis). This is especially urgent if accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes, or severe headache. Don't wait—call 911 or go to the ER immediately.
If your readings are elevated or high, check regularly—ideally at the same time daily. Most people with normal BP should check at least annually during routine checkups. Those with hypertension may need daily monitoring per their doctor's recommendation.
Exercise regularly, reduce sodium intake, limit alcohol, manage stress, maintain a healthy weight, and eat a DASH diet rich in fruits and vegetables. If lifestyle changes don't help after 3-6 months, talk to your doctor about medication options.
