How to calculate concrete

For a rectangular slab: multiply Length × Width × Thickness (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. Always order 10% extra to account for spillage and uneven subgrades.

Slab: CY = (L × W × T/12) ÷ 27
Cylinder: CY = (π × r² × H) ÷ 27

One cubic yard fills a 4-inch slab covering approximately 81 square feet. For most residential slabs, concrete is ordered in cubic yards from a ready-mix truck (minimum order typically 1 yd³). Bags are practical only for small jobs under about 0.5 cubic yards.

How thick should a concrete slab be?
