Frequently Asked Questions

How is the needed final grade calculated?

The formula is: Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. For example, if your current grade is 78%, target is 90%, and the final is worth 25%, you'd need: (90 − 78 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%.

What if the score needed is above 100%?

If the calculator shows you need more than 100% on the final, it's mathematically impossible to reach your target grade. You'd either need to adjust your target or discuss extra credit options with your instructor.

How does the final exam weight work?

The weight is the percentage your final exam counts toward your overall grade. For example, a 25% weight means your final is worth one-quarter of your grade, and your current grade counts for 75%.

Can I use this for multiple exams?

This calculator is designed for a single final exam. If you have multiple remaining assignments, calculate your weighted average of those, then use that as your "current grade" and adjust the final weight accordingly.

Should I aim for exactly the needed score?

It's wise to aim slightly higher than the calculated score to account for rounding or if you miscalculated your current grade. Aiming for 1-2% above the needed score provides a small safety margin.
